Dover – Respect The Sign. That’s the message that Delaware Office of Highway Safety (OHS) officials are sending to drivers as they launch the agency's aggressive driving campaign for 2011. The "Respect the Sign" aggressive driving campaign is a high-visibility enforcement and awareness initiative aimed at reducing aggressive driving-related traffic deaths. New this year, OHS will conduct seven 2-week mini waves of enforcement beginning February 27th and ending in early December. Enforcement will be accompanied by outreach efforts focused on reducing the top four aggressive driving behaviors that cause crashes: speeding, failure to yield the right of way (not waiting for other drivers), driving left of center (unsafe lane changing) and stop sign violations...

Dover – If you ever drive after the sun goes down, Delaware Office of Highway Safety and law enforcement officials have some advice for you. Remember to Buckle Up! Seat belt use is often 10% lower at night than in the day even though a person's chances of being killed in a crash at night triples! In fact, more than a third of Delaware's fatal crashes (35%) involving an unrestrained driver or passenger in 2010 occurred during the night time hours...

Dover – The Delaware Office of Highway Safety (OHS) has launched a public awareness and education campaign stressing the dangers of driving while under the influence of prescription drugs. According to The Roadside Survey of Impaired Drivers, sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA,) in 2007 more than sixteen percent (16%) of 5,900 nighttime drivers tested around the country were positive for illegal, prescription, or over-the-counter medication. In Delaware in 2009, ten percent (10%) of the 102 fatal crashes involved individuals under the influence of drugs...

01/07/2011 - 2010 Traffic Deaths Drop to Lowest in Over 40 Years

Dover – Delaware Office of Highway Safety officials are pleased to announce a 10% drop in fatal traffic crashes, and an even greater fourteen (14%) percent drop in Delaware’s traffic deaths for 2010. While these are preliminary figures in the total, there were 92 fatal motor vehicle crashes resulting in 101 fatalities in 2010. This is the lowest number of traffic fatalities to occur on First State roadways since 1968 when there were 98 traffic fatalities. Tragically, even with the reduction in fatal traffic crashes from 102 crashes in 2009 to 92 in 2010, Delaware still lost 101 individuals in motor vehicle crashes last year. In comparison, 118 people were killed in traffic collisions the year before...
